What to Do With a Gas Tank Leak

!±8± What to Do With a Gas Tank Leak

A gas tank leak is not only an expansive affair but also hazardous in case the fuel catches on fire. There are so many reasons for fuel leak such as physical damage and tarnishing of straps holding tank. Before trying to fix the leak, one should first clean it appropriately. Use a siphon to drain gasoline from engine and run the car's engine until it stops or goes out of gas completely.

Detach fuel pump and wires which lead to tank from the engine. Take away the tank by unbolting it and eradicating metal straps keeping it down. In order to remove bolts from the vehicle's engine, one would need to make use of 'ratchet tool' with extension. After one has taken away fuel pump-ring, the next step involves removing straps from the tank. A few tanks have volts while some have straps kept by Velcro. Now, check for leakage by examining the tank closely. Firstly, one needs to test where the strap used to dwell as such parts are vulnerable to rust and moisture. After one has identified the 'leak' and rinsed the gas out of the tank to prevent leaking, he needs to polish tank by leaking part until coating or the paint surrounding the fuel-tank is removed.

The next step would require one to remove rust from leaking area. Once all the rust has been removed from tank, one can make use of repair 'putty' to fill a hole in tank. One can buy this putty from nearby auto-supply and hardware stores. It is highly imperative to follow the instructions of manufacturer cautiously before using the putty. Once the 'putty' is dry, re-attach the bottom plates to the tank and then repaint it if required.
